Sarah Ferguson, Duchess of York, reveals early breast cancer diagnosis: 'Prognosis is good'

Sarah Ferguson was diagnosed with  "early stage breast cancer". 

 

 The Duchess of York received the diagnosis during a routine mammogram and was "informed she will undergo surgery which has been successfully completed", her agent Lauren Auslander told. USA TODAY in a statement on Sunday. 

 "Ferguson's prognosis is good" and she is "symptomatic." Currently, Ferguson is "recovering with his family", his agent added. 

  Ferguson (aka Fergie) was the ex-wife of Prince Andrew,  Duke of York (1986-1996). The two girls share  Princess Eugenie and Princess Beatrice. According to Auslander, the former senior  royal expressed "tremendous gratitude to all the medical staff" who treated her and stressed "the importance of regular check-ups".  Sarah Ferguson had a mastectomy  for breast cancer 

 In an episode of the "Tea Talks with the Duchess and Sarah" podcast posted on Spotify on Sunday, Ferguson talked about his diagnosis and  surgery. The podcast was recorded the day before her mastectomy.  Ferguson shared how she felt before the surgery.  

 "Of course the spirit of doubt comes in, you know, I think  you just... when it comes to light  and says 'no, no, I get it'," Ferguson said.  

 She repeatedly advised listeners to be screened for breast cancer and  other cancers. "I'm telling the people out there because I want everyone who listens to this podcast (go) and gets checked out," she said, then urged "don't wait." 

 

 “I think it's important that we  wake people up to get on the screen,” she said. 

  The Duchess added that she is on a mission to get in shape, in part due to the diagnosis. “I see it as a real gift for me to change my life – to nourish myself,” she says. 

 Duchess Fergie has supported cancer research in the past 

 Ferguson has been an advocate of cancer research in the past. In July 2022, she and her daughters Beatrice and Eugenie  met online with cancer patients and nurses to open University Hospital London's Department of Hematology NHS Foundation Trust.  "This is a  charity that is especially close to my heart. Cancer doesn't just wreak havoc on a young person's health, it threatens to take away everything they hold dear: their identity, their independence and their dreams. their dreams." she said in a statement to the organization. "The specialist nurses and youth staff at the Teenage Cancer Trust provide the  best care and support during treatment and beyond, ensuring that cancer does not prevent young people from living their lives." 

 

 Ferguson added: "I opened the first Teen Cancer Trust  for young people in London in 1990, and 32 years later, I'm here with my daughters, helping to start the cancer service. This new blood letter at UCLH, is truly remarkable."
